Dear Safe Schools Community,

The current iteration of the Florida State Guard should be very concerning to the LGBTQ community. Couched as a volunteer force tasked to help during natural disasters, it has suddenly been given a budget of over $100 million and access to military-style equipment like boats and helicopters. Its members have the authority to bear arms and make arrests.

The Guard is under the sole authority of the Governor and can be activated anytime there is a “threat to public safety.” With several LGBTQ issues being the source of great recent controversy, it’s easy to imagine authorities deeming them a public threat.
