Happy Fourth of July: Embracing Our Role in America’s Ongoing Journey
As we gather to celebrate the Fourth of July, it’s essential to take a step back and view our nation’s journey through the lens of “big history.” This perspective allows us to see the long arc of progress, setbacks, triumphs, and trials as we strive towards creating a more perfect union. Today, we reflect not only on our past achievements but also on the work that remains to be done.
Despite its flaws, this country remains a land of possibilities for many. Our vote is still a powerful tool to guide our nation toward justice, equity, equality, and respect for the diverse cultures and people that compose this great nation. George Washington once referred to “the establishment of our new Government” as “the last great experiment for promoting human happiness.” This experiment is ongoing, and it requires our active participation to thrive.
In the queer community, we know the importance of uniqueness and authenticity. These traits are catalytic variables that drive the evolution of this great experiment. They help shape a nation that better reflects who we are as a whole rather than conforming to the narrow views of a few. On this Independence Day, we stand proud, fully aware of the hurt inflicted in the past and recognizing that our country currently falls short of our national motto: E pluribus unum, out of many, one.
The path toward true unity and equality is not an easy one. We are at a crossroads, and it is up to us to use our voices, votes, and capacity to build communities of love and acceptance to steer our country in the right direction. Robert Frost’s famous words remind us that taking the “less traveled” road can make “all the difference.” This road, while challenging, is the path toward a future where everyone is free to live authentically and with dignity.
As we celebrate this Fourth of July, let us commit to waking up to the realities around us. We must avoid apathy and engage with the world, recognizing that our efforts today will shape the future. The queer community has always been a beacon of resilience and innovation, and it is this spirit that will help guide our nation toward a more inclusive and just society.
In honoring this day, let us also honor the ongoing fight for liberation, justice, and equality. Our journey is far from over, but together; we can continue to push the boundaries of possibility and create a country that truly embodies the values we celebrate today.
