UM Presentation on Creative Resistance
For Students (Handout)
Introduction
Queer Liberation seeks to transform society, challenging the structures of heteronormativity and cisnormativity. Martin Luther King Jr.’s concept of creative resistance, from his book Where Do We Go From Here, reminds us that our resistance must be bold, innovative, and compassionate. His call for “creative dissenters” is a model for how we can stand up against oppression today.
Queer Liberation Movement
The Queer Liberation Movement demands more than just inclusion—it calls for the dismantling of societal structures that oppress LGBTQ+ people. This movement asks us to bring our full, authentic selves into every aspect of our lives. Creative resistance must extend into every sphere of influence. When we are bold and live authentically, people resonate with that truth and are more likely to stand with us.
King’s Concept of Creative Resistance
Martin Luther King Jr.’s idea of creative resistance emphasizes nonviolent, compassionate resistance that calls society to a higher standard. He believed that even if we feel like we are screaming into the wilderness, we must stand firm in our values. Silence allows oppression to grow louder, but by being bold and speaking our truth, we can push back against those who would try to silence us.
Safe Schools & Creative Resistance
In response to anti-LGBTQ+ laws, like Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, Safe Schools creatively resisted by shifting its programming from in-person to digital formats. This move allowed Safe Schools to bypass restrictive laws and provide accessible content to a global audience. Safe Schools explores the queer experience through politics, technology, theology, popular culture, and history—demonstrating that resistance can occur in every sphere.
Examples of Safe Schools’ Creative Resistance
Safe Schools has embraced innovative ways to continue supporting LGBTQ+ youth and professionals. Programs like EmpowerQ, which offer in-person youth groups, and digital trainings like Queering the Spectrum ensure that LGBTQ+ education and support continue, even under restrictive laws. By collaborating with other marginalized groups, Safe Schools highlights the importance of unity in fighting oppression, recognizing that coalition-building strengthens all liberation movements.
Conclusion
Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of creative dissenters challenges us to bring our full selves into every aspect of our lives. We must be bold, live authentically, and unite with others who are also facing systemic oppression. If it is safe to do so, speak your truth. Safe Schools’ digital-first approach is an example of how we can creatively resist harmful laws and policies while ensuring that LGBTQ+ voices are heard and celebrated. Let us unite and work toward liberation for all.
