Here's what the decision means, and how we move forward together. - [Robert Loupo, Founder and Executive Director Emeritus, Reflects on the Passing of Ruth Shack](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/robert-loupo-founder-and-executive-director-emeritus-reflects-on-the-passing-of-ruth-shack/): I first heard of Ruth Shack in 1977 when I was a frightened 26-year-old who had recently come out to himself and a few others in rural Southern Baptist South Carolina. - [Call Me by My Name: Letting People Tell You Who They Are](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/call-me-by-my-name-letting-people-tell-you-who-they-are/): Each of us carries many names, given, chosen, inherited, reclaimed. Names tell the stories of who we are, where we come from, and how we want to be seen. Yet too often, the world decides for us. During Hispanic Heritage Month, Safe Schools South Florida celebrates the depth and diversity of Hispanic and Latin American identities, especially within our LGBTQ+ communities, whose voices have long challenged the idea that culture, language, or gender can ever be limited to one definition. - [Housing Is a Human Right: How the Healthy Housing Foundation Is Reimagining Affordable Living](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/housing-is-a-human-right-how-the-healthy-housing-foundation-is-reimagining-affordable-living/): Across the United States, the affordable housing crisis is pushing more and more families and individuals into unsafe, unstable, or unhoused situations. At Safe Schools, we know that housing and education are deeply connected—students can’t thrive in classrooms when their families are struggling to keep a roof overhead. That’s why we’re highlighting the work of the Healthy Housing Foundation (HHF), a program of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), that’s tackling this crisis with urgency, creativity, and a bold vision: housing is a human right. - [Safe Schools Statement on FDOT’s Order to Erase Painted Streets and Sidewalks](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/safe-schools-statement-on-fdots-order-to-erase-painted-streets-and-sidewalks/): Safe Schools condemns the Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) directive ordering cities to remove painted crosswalks, streets, and sidewalks—including LGBTQ+ Pride memorials—under threat of losing state funding. FDOT is enforcing a 2024 design bulletin and a June 30, 2025 memo that now prohibit any pavement or surface art on travel lanes, intersections, crosswalks, and sidewalks, and require local governments to make all markings “uniform and consistent.” FDOT Blob Storage+2FDOT Blob Storage+2, Florida Department of Transportation - [Safe Schools Summer Update: Showing Up, Standing Strong, and Spreading Love](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/safe-schools-summer-update-showing-up-standing-strong-and-spreading-love/): As our educators, youth, and families take time to recharge and enjoy the summer, wherever and however they can, Safe Schools has been hard at work with our incredible partners, making this summer one for the books. Together, we've offered bold, joyful, and affirming programming that has reached hundreds across South Florida and thousands more through our ever-expanding digital platforms. - [Emerging Trends in LGBTQ+ Media and Youth Culture](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/emerging-trends-in-lgbtq-media-and-youth-culture/): Growth of LGBTQ+ identification - [Over $800,000 Raised to Protect and Empower Queer Youth](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/over-800000-raised-to-protect-and-empower-queer-youth/): At Safe Schools South Florida, we believe that every young person deserves access to truth, safety, and the tools to protect their future. Thanks to the generosity of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and The Florida AIDS Walk, we are proud to announce that together we raised over $800,000 this year. These funds directly support our work to educate and empower queer youth across South Florida through comprehensive HIV/AIDS awareness, no-nonsense sexual health education, and access to life-saving medications and prevention resources. - [We’ve Got a Haus!](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/weve-got-a-haus/): Safe Schools South Florida just made a bold move. As of May 1st, we are officially the new proprietors of Undergrounds Coffeehaus, located at 3020 N Federal Hwy #5a, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33306. - [Taboo Talk: The One About HIV/AIDS 🌈 Breaking the Silence: HIV AIDS Awareness for LGBTQ+ Youth! 🎙️](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/taboo-talk-the-one-about-hiv-aids-%f0%9f%8c%88-breaking-the-silence-hiv-aids-awareness-for-lgbtq-youth-%f0%9f%8e%99%ef%b8%8f/): Welcome to “Taboo Talk” with your host, David! 🎤 Today’s episode dives into a critical conversation about HIV/AIDS, especially focusing on its impact in South Florida. 🌴🌊 We’re here to empower our LGBTQ+ youth with knowledge and resources. 🌈💪 - [Opinion | The Gen Z Myth: How Youth Disillusionment is Reshaping American Politics](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/opinion-the-gen-z-myth-how-youth-disillusionment-is-reshaping-american-politics/): The recent election cycle has shattered the long-held belief that Generation Z would serve as the vanguard of progressive change in America. Contrary to expectations, we witnessed a significant shift: young voters, particularly young men, gravitated towards conservative candidates, with many casting their ballots for Donald Trump. This trend not only challenges the narrative of an inherently progressive youth but also raises pressing questions about the future of our democracy. - [Queering Valentine’s Day: Love, Connection & Self-Discovery](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/queering-valentines-day-love-connection-self-discovery/): Valentine’s Day often brings to mind heart-shaped chocolates, romantic dinners, and grand gestures of love. But let’s be real—this day is about so much more than just couples and romance. For the queer community, especially high school and college students navigating identity, relationships, and self-discovery, Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to redefine love on our own terms. - [The Rainbow Report – Safe Schools TV: Expanding Horizons and Empowering LGBTQ+ Youth in Uncertain Times](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/the-rainbow-report-safe-schools-tv-expanding-horizons-and-empowering-lgbtq-youth-in-uncertain-times/): As we move further into 2025, Safe Schools TV remains a beacon of hope, truth, and empowerment for LGBTQ+ youth, parents, and educators across the nation. In the face of a rising tide of fear, censorship, and political instability brought on by the current administration, our commitment to storytelling as a form of resistance has only grown stronger. - [America’s Racial Divide: Power, Caste, and the Fight for Truth](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/americas-racial-divide-power-caste-and-the-fight-for-truth/): America loves a good myth. We hear about the Founding Fathers as champions of freedom, the Constitution as a flawless blueprint for justice, and the American Dream as a promise that anyone can succeed if they just work hard enough. But beneath these polished narratives lies an undeniable truth: racism isn’t just an ugly chapter in America’s past—it’s the ink that wrote the whole story. - [We Say Gay! How Safe Schools Fought Back Against “Don’t Say Gay” in Florida](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/we-say-gay-how-safe-schools-fought-back-against-dont-say-gay-in-florida/): When Florida introduced the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, it sent a chilling message to students, educators, and families across the state: LGBTQ+ voices didn’t belong in the classroom. But Safe Schools knew better. We understood that silence is never an option when young lives are at stake, and we mobilized immediately. Our resistance to this legislation didn’t just create a wave of activism—it provided a blueprint for how to counter attacks on education and LGBTQ+ rights at every level. - [Federal ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Order Threatens LGBTQ+ Students and Teachers](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/federal-dont-say-gay-order-threatens-lgbtq-students-and-teachers/): Overview of the Executive Order - [Remembering the 80th Anniversary of Auschwitz’s Liberation: A Lesson for Today](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/remembering-the-80th-anniversary-of-auschwitzs-liberation-a-lesson-for-today/): Eighty years ago, on January 27, 1945, the world witnessed the liberation of one of history’s darkest sites: the Auschwitz concentration camp. When the gates were opened, the unimaginable horrors that had been inflicted there—and in so many other camps—could no longer be denied. It is vital that we remember not only what happened at Auschwitz, but also what steps allowed such atrocities to occur. This is more than a historical reflection; it’s a warning, a clarion call to stay vigilant in protecting all marginalized communities. - [Honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Continuing the Work for True Equity](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/honoring-rev-dr-martin-luther-king-jr-continuing-the-work-for-true-equity/): Every year around this time, our nation pauses to reflect on the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For so many of us, Dr. King’s name is synonymous with courageous leadership, nonviolent resistance, and a dream of equality that transcends racial barriers. He preached a message of love over hate, unity over division, and compassion over contempt. It’s important for all of us—especially in educational spaces like Safe Schools—to understand that his legacy is not solely relevant to Black and white racial dynamics. His transformative vision extends to every one of us who faces discrimination or stands in solidarity with those who do. - [SAFE SCHOOLS: 2024 ANNUAL REPORT](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/safe-schools-2024-annual-report/): Safe Schools South Florida: 2024 Annual Report - [Kwanzaa Through a Queer Lens: Building an Unbreakable Chain of Hope](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/kwanzaa-through-a-queer-lens-building-an-unbreakable-chain-of-hope/): Kwanzaa, created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966, is a Pan-African holiday celebrated from December 26 to January 1 that honors African heritage, culture, and values. Its name is derived from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning “first fruits of the harvest.” At its core, Kwanzaa is a celebration of Black liberation, self-determination, community, and creativity—and these principles resonate deeply with the ongoing journey of queer liberation as well. - [A Queer Perspective on Hanukkah: Fueling Our Light with Authenticity](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/a-queer-perspective-on-hanukkah-fueling-our-light-with-authenticity/): Every year around this time, the gentle glow of the Hanukkah menorah meets the warmth of community as families and friends come together to celebrate the Festival of Lights. It’s a holiday that commemorates a long-ago victory over oppression, when the ancient Jewish community resisted the Seleucid Empire’s attempts to suppress Jewish religious identity. After reclaiming their Holy Temple, they found enough oil to keep the menorah lit for just one day—yet miraculously, that small amount of oil lasted for eight days. This enduring flame became a powerful emblem of hope, resilience, and authenticity. - [A Queer Perspective on Christmas: Finding Hope in Ancient Stories for a More Just and Equitable World](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/a-queer-perspective-on-christmas-finding-hope-in-ancient-stories-for-a-more-just-and-equitable-world/): From twinkling lights on evergreen trees to songs of angels and silent nights, Christmas has long carried a sense of wonder and promise—especially for those who are marginalized or overlooked, including many in the LGBTQ+ community. Rooted in ancient stories of hope from Hebrew prophets and reimagined today in music, décor, and festive gatherings, the narrative of Christ’s birth symbolizes the arrival of a new vision for a world transformed by compassion, equity, and collective care. This reimagining can be deeply resonant for queer folks and allies, offering a modern message of hope that is far broader than the walls of any religious institution. - [Embracing the Light: A Queer Perspective on the Winter Solstice and a Hopeful Vision for 2025](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/embracing-the-light-a-queer-perspective-on-the-winter-solstice-and-a-hopeful-vision-for-2025/): As the days grow short and the nights long, many of us find ourselves leaning into the cozy quiet of the winter solstice. This pivotal celestial moment—when the sun stands still and offers us the shortest day and longest night—has long been celebrated across cultures for marking a turning point, a shift from darkness toward the eventual return of the light. - [Spirit Day 2024: Extending the Call for LGBTQ+ Youth Support Year-Round](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/spirit-day-2024-extending-the-call-for-lgbtq-youth-support-year-round/): October 17 marks Spirit Day, a powerful day of solidarity when individuals, organizations, and communities across the world don purple to stand against LGBTQ+ bullying. This day, initiated by GLAAD, sheds light on the struggles many LGBTQ+ youth face—bullying, isolation, and discrimination. These challenges often create an environment where young queer people feel marginalized, leading to higher rates of school dropout, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. At Safe Schools, we recognize Spirit Day as an essential call to action—a reminder that creating a safe and affirming environment for LGBTQ+ youth is not only crucial today but every day. - [Episode 11: Part 2 – Real-Life Experiences | The Impact of Project 2025 | Rainbow Roundtable](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/episode-11-part-2-real-life-experiences-the-impact-of-project-2025-rainbow-roundtable/): Welcome back to the Safe Schools Rainbow Roundtable. Through these stories, we'll see how life might change over the next four years and how the mental health effects of these actions could impact generations to come. - [Celebrating the Many Faces of Motherhood: Embracing Chosen Families This Mother’s Day](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/celebrating-the-many-faces-of-motherhood-embracing-chosen-families-this-mothers-day/): As we celebrate Mother's Day, it's essential to reflect on the evolving concept of motherhood in our society, particularly through a queer lens. Traditionally, motherhood has been associated with biological or legal ties framed within the heteronormative family structure. However, for many in the LGBTQ+ community, the notion of motherhood—and family more broadly—is beautifully complex and expansively redefined. - [The Rainbow Report – Visioning a Future of Authenticity and Support for Trans and Non-Binary Communities](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/the-rainbow-report-visioning-a-future-of-authenticity-and-support-for-trans-and-non-binary-communities/): In a world that often seems mired in uncertainty and divisiveness, the "Safe Schools Rainbow Roundtable," under the guidance of Safe Schools Board Member Franchesca D'Amore, casts a beacon of hope, charting a course towards a future where transgender and non-binary individuals are celebrated for who they are. A Personal Reflection On Florida’s Anti-Trans Legislation](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/when-will-it-stop-a-personal-reflection-on-floridas-anti-trans-legislation/): When will it stop? These targeted attacks against our transgender siblings are blatant discriminatory actions by a government that should represent all its people. There's a significant point to be made about the psychology of those who use the most marginalized and vulnerable in our community as political tools to appease a segment of society that seems out of touch with reality. This is a form of spiritual warfare affecting all aspects of our society. The issue is neither religious—despite some claiming their actions are based on a singular interpretation of the Christian faith—nor scientific, as there are no peer-reviewed statements justifying prejudice against our trans siblings. What is happening in Florida is unequivocally wrong and represents a commitment to acts of psychological violence against a frequently misunderstood community, which too often bears the collective anxiety of our ever-expanding rainbow alphabet. - [The Rainbow Report – Unity Against Division: An Immigrant’s Reflection on January 6th](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/the-rainbow-report-unity-against-division-an-immigrants-reflection-on-january-6th/): As someone who once sought refuge from the tyranny of a system that favored the few over the many, the events of January 6th, 2021, in the United States resonate deeply with me. This day was not just an assault on a building but an attack on the very ethos of democracy. It was a vivid reminder that the freedom and democracy we often take for granted are fragile and must be actively protected. - [Reflecting on January 6th: A Call to Defend Our Democracy and Embrace Those on the Margins](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/reflecting-on-january-6th-a-call-to-defend-our-democracy-and-embrace-those-on-the-margins/): January 6th, 2021, will forever be etched in the annals of American history as a day that tested the very fabric of our democracy. On this day, an insurrection fueled by falsehoods and a refusal to accept the democratic process unfolded in the halls of our nation's Capitol. It wasn't just a physical assault; it was an attack on the fundamental principles underpinning our society – the peaceful transfer of power and respect for the people's will. - [Envisioning Tomorrow: The Future of HIV/AIDS | Rainbow Roundtable Ep. 4 Segment 4](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/envisioning-tomorrow-the-future-of-hiv-aids-rainbow-roundtable-ep-4-segment-4/): In the final segment of Episode 4 of The Safe Schools Rainbow Roundtable, we embark on a forward-looking journey into the future of HIV/AIDS. The year 2024 is not just another year; it is a critical moment in our nation’s history, a time when civic engagement and awareness are paramount. The aftermath of the January 6th insurrection and the rising tide of fascism in our state governments have underscored the importance of this election cycle. It may well be one of the most consequential in our nation's history. - [The Rainbow Report – Welcoming 2024 with Hope and Positivity: A Message from Safe Schools!](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/the-rainbow-report-welcoming-2024-with-hope-and-positivity-a-message-from-safe-schools/): As the clock ticks closer to 2024, we at Safe Schools embrace the new year not with trepidation but with a heart full of hope. Our programs have empowered tens of thousands of LGBTQ+ students throughout South Florida.  Safe Schools South Florida has also trained thousands more education professionals and staff who impact the lives of students everywhere.  In 2022, we were at the forefront of LGBTQ+ youth organizations fighting what would become the "Don't Say Gay" law.  We took students to Tallahassee to lobby legislators, organized community rallies, and much more.  Though we didn't succeed in the short term, our students are ready to continue the fight for LGBTQ+ rights for as long as necessary. - [Donate](https://safeschoolssouthflorida.org/donate/): Protect.
